X has no formatting in posts. You cannot bold a word, and quoting yourself in italics is not an option either.
Styled characters get around that, which is why you see the occasional post with one bold line in the middle of plain text.
Which fields accept styled text?
The display name and the bio both take it, and so does the body of a post. The handle after the @ does not, since it is limited to 15 characters of letters, numbers, and underscores.
The bio holds 160 characters and the display name holds 50, so a heavy style can eat into that faster than you expect.
Using it without looking like a bot
- One bold phrase inside a normal post reads as emphasis. A whole post in gothic reads as spam and gets scrolled past.
- Monospace is the quiet option that works well for quoting code or a short data point.
- Keep your name plain in at least one place on the profile, so people can actually search for you.
- Styled text is not indexed as the same words, which matters if you want a post to be found later.
Tip: I once put my whole display name in bold script and stopped getting tagged properly, because people copying my name from the profile were pasting characters that did not match my handle. Plain name, styled bio line, and the problem went away.
