Discord has real markdown in messages, so bold and italic there are one keystroke away and always render correctly.

Where styled characters earn their place is the parts markdown cannot touch, and that is your nickname, your About Me, and channel names.

Username, display name, or nickname?

Discord keeps three names for you now. The username is unique and lowercase, so nothing here saves in that field.

The display name and the per-server nickname both accept styled characters, and the nickname is the one most people decorate.

The About Me field holds a short bio and takes styled text too, which is where the aesthetic profiles you see get built.

Server side considerations

  • Moderators often ask for readable nicknames, because a name nobody can type cannot be mentioned or moderated easily.
  • Some servers run bots that auto-rename members with unusual characters, so check the rules before you commit.
  • Monospace is genuinely useful for short snippets, though a code block does the job better in a message.
  • Bracket frames keep the plain name inside them, which is the version that stays typeable for everyone else.
Tip: I set a nickname in gothic on a server and a moderator renamed me within an hour, not out of strictness but because nobody could ping me. A bracket frame around my plain name got the same look and stayed mentionable.

This page styles text you already have. If you are still working out the name itself, a nickname generator covers that side, and it is easier to pick the words first and style them once at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use fancy fonts in my Discord username?

No. Usernames are lowercase and limited to plain characters. Display names and per-server nicknames are where styled text works.

How do I bold text in a Discord message?

Put two asterisks on each side of the word. Discord supports markdown in messages, which is cleaner than styled characters and always renders.

Will people still be able to mention me?

Only if they can type your name. Mentions work through the autocomplete, so a fully styled nickname makes you harder to tag in practice.

Can I style channel names?

If you have the permission, yes. Channel names accept many styled characters, though Discord lowercases text channel names.
