Cool text is the search people use when they know what they want it to feel like and not what it is called.
Usually it means sharp rather than pretty, so gothic, outline, and monospace do more here than script does.
Which styles read as cool rather than cute?
Gothic has the strongest character of anything on the list, and it works particularly well on short words where the shapes have room.
Outline reads as clean and technical, which suits usernames and headings more than it suits sentences.
Monospace has a terminal feel to it, and it is the one style here that also stays perfectly readable at length.
Using it without wrecking the text
- Keep the styled part under about four words, since every one of these gets tiring quickly.
- Strikethrough and slashed styles add a mark to every letter, so they cost you double against a character limit.
- Arrow and bracket frames keep your letters plain, which is the safer option in fields with filters.
- Anything that needs to be searched or typed back should stay in ordinary characters.
Tip: I used a slashed style for a display name and it looked sharp on my screen and completely unreadable in a friends list, where the marks stacked into a smudge. Bold with a bracket frame gave the same energy and survived being shown small.
