Call of Duty gives you two separate things to decorate, and they follow different rules.
The display name is the longer one, and the clan tag is capped at four characters, which is the tightest tag limit in any major shooter.
Name and tag rules
Clan tags are limited to four characters, so the tag is the place for a short abbreviation rather than for decoration.
The display name accepts more, though the filter rejects a fair share of unusual characters and the game does not explain which.
Renaming is limited and sometimes paid, so testing the exact string before confirming is worth the extra step.
Reading in a kill feed
- Kill feeds and scoreboards render names small, so gothic capitals blur into each other.
- Outline and bold hold their shape better at that size than the more decorative alphabets.
- A tag in brackets reads as a team marker, which is exactly what it should look like.
- Avoid characters that make your name impossible to report or to add as a friend.
Tip: A squad I played with used gothic tags and the enemy team kept calling us by the wrong name because the letters were unreadable at feed size. Plain letters in brackets fixed it and nobody missed the decoration.
